7 Quicktakes Friday turned Saturday

We are attending a kid's Halloween costume themed birthday party today, so my blogging got put off last night in favor of finishing up our costumes. So, Quicktakes Saturday it is.

1. We officially made OktoBEERfest a family tradition. Check out more details here on my Roses for Mommy blog. Chris and I agreed that this year was better organized in the way we prepped and planned for the event, and our menu choices were all spot on. Still, my two favorites were the chocolate cherry stout brownies and the pimento cheese pie bites.

2. Ava is potty training.

Nope, I'm not trying to be supermom. I have already tried (albeit half-heartedly) to begin the potty training process a couple times with her, and with my current busy schedule plus being very pregnant, I had decided that this was something I needed to say no to because it was just going to be too overwhelming until after baby arrives....

Ava didn't have the same plan. Last week, she asked to use the toilet and went poop. She has gone poop in the toilet at least once a day since then, usually more, but the potty part still holds her up. She has gone potty twice, but only when she has also gone #2. Still playing it on the lazy side, I kept her in diapers and just let her do the poop in the toilet, potty in the diaper thing until yesterday. I finally put her in a pair of undies. She had one accident, and then kept the underwear dry the rest of the day. BUT she still didn't potty in the toilet. Instead she held it until nap and night time when she wears a diaper. The plus side of that is that I know she is ready because she can hold it that long which means her body definitely has the ability to potty train at this time, so once she gets it, we may just have a diaper-less house for a brief time.

3. Kayla is sounding out words and learning sight words like a champ these days. She read a whole book by herself the other day with very minimal help for a few words she'd never seen before. It is so exciting to see her eyes light up as she reads and figures out the words on her own without our help.

4. Elise cracks us up a lot these days. She has become a fashionista of sorts, for us, not herself so much. She seems to like most of the shirts Chris wears, and tells him so, "Daddy, I like your shirt. I really like your shirt." When I wear an outfit that meets her approval, I get told that I look very pretty, but when I have lazy days and choose a pair of comfy athletic shorts and a roomy T-shirt for the belly, she comments, "I don't like that shirt, Mommy." Chris gets the most compliments on his "Disneyland shirts" (the 3 eyeballs guys shirt and his Jedi Kermit the Frog shirt).

5. Between 32 and 33 weeks currently. I still have a pretty good amount of energy and am able to be nearly as active as usual, but I have also been experiencing the loveliness of lower back pain and I've already got the waddle most days because of that. So we are definitely getting closer and closer! Baby moves around a lot and likes to stick out various body parts which is neat to watch, but he/she is a strong little thing, so it gets a bit uncomfortable at times, too. Plus baby likes to hang out really low and headbutt my pelvis, which is not comfortable at all. The girls are getting more and more excited and still switch their guess for boy and girl nearly every day.

6. As Ava potty trains, there is quite a bit of time that Chris and I spend sitting reading books with her in the bathroom. As a result of the last 4-5 days, she is practicing her colors and animal/animal sounds a lot. Her favorite color is purple and it was the first that she recognized with regularity. She is getting better at blue, green, orange, and pink too. Red gives her more trouble than the rest at the moment. She loves when Chris reads an animal board book from Grammy to her. She recognizes A LOT of animals and knows the sounds. Shark seems to be one of her favorites....

7. This last quicktake made more sense yesterday when I meant to post this....
9 years ago, yesterday, Chris asked me to be his first (and only) girlfriend in a little town in Austria. After attempting to take me to the Akathist (a beautiful Byzantine prayer to Our Lady) and finding out it had been cancelled that week, he suggested praying a Rosary together and taking a walk. During our walk, we meandered to a bridge where he had apparently hidden half a dozen roses. The Rosary, a lovely walk in nature, roses, the little "speech", and the look in his eyes was a combination I couldn't have said no to even if I'd had a mind to. 9 years later, I'm simply grateful to God for sending such an amazing man into my life. We aren't perfect, but it's been the best 9 years of my life.

And because this isn't Friday anymore, I will add another quick note. This morning Chris and I tag-teamed a yummy fall breakfast which included these pumpkin cinnamon streusel pancakes and this brown sugar maple bacon . They were delicious.
