Family Consecration Prayer

It has taken far longer than I expected it would because as you can see from this post dating back to the first of this year, it has been a 2014 goal to write a family consecration prayer.  As you can see from the post I linked to above, long ago when we were dating, the hubby and I wrote a personalized relationship/marriage consecration that is unique to us, and we say it here and there together throughout the year.  This year, we also did 33 Days to Morning Glory to Jesus through Mary together, which was a really incredible experience.  But somehow it is already November and a personalized family consecration prayer was still unwritten.  But I said we'd write it in 2014 and we surely did; with a month and a half to spare even.  :)

I deviated from the original goal of writing a family consecration to Jesus through Mary, because I wanted to include the entire Holy Family.  St. Joseph has been a favorite of the hubby's since before we were dating and has been a model of fatherhood and humility and just couldn't be left out of a family consecration around here.

Drawing inspiration from various prayers to the Holy Family and a few favorites Saints quotes, we created a consecration that is personal to us and speaks in a unique way of our own little family's love and devotion to the Holy Family.  It is my hope that sharing our family consecration with you will inspire you to write one of your own that is personal to you and your family.  Perhaps you already have one that blesses your lives and draws your family together in prayer daily in a very special way.

Consecration to the Holy Family

Most loving Jesus, look down mercifully upon our family as we place our trust in you and ask for your protection.  We ask you to give us the grace to live humbly, serving one another, and sharing your love with all those we meet, beginning in our home.  We consecrate ourselves this day to your holy cross and unite ourselves with your mother, Mary, at the foot of your cross, as we learn to lovingly accept the crosses in our lives and offer them back to you.  Deliver us from evil and give us the strength to persevere in love so that we may someday give you eternal praise in heaven.

Mary, be our mother and give us your heart, filled with love for your Son.  We are yours;be the star that leads the way to our heavenly Father and hold our hands in times of trial as you lead us to your Son.

Dear St. Joseph, show us how to live in humble service to each other, silently praying and giving of ourselves for the good of our family and living a life of purity and fidelity.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph,

help our family to be more
and more like your Holy Family.

The last line of the consecration we wrote was taken directly from this activity (see image below) which our oldest completed last week and which simultaneously reminded me that our 2014 goal was still unfinished.  Since our girls are still so young, it is our plan to pray the full consecration each Sunday (either after grace at dinner or in the evening when we say prayers at bedtime with the kids) and then to say this portion of it with them each day.  This small portion will be manageable for them to memorize at this age and eventually we can move to praying the entire consecration together each day as a family.
