So it's not Friday, but I'm going to share some quicktakes anyhow because things happened this week. Little things. Nothing big, but things.
1. Date with Baby
Chris and I went on a date last Saturday. We had been frustrated by some things and decided we needed to just get a baby sitter for a few hours and go have FUN! But we couldn't actually leave Kolbe behind yet and it turns out there is very little to do that is FUN that is any different from anything we could have done if we'd have just taken the whole family. But my expectations were pretty high since we never get out, and sadly, we weren't able to do really do much of anything. We did take a little walk and enjoy some of the fall foliage.
Anyway my expectations were kinda shattered and truth be told I'm pretty awful at recovering when I have expectations. So I pretty much ruined it for myself and consequently for all of us. But we made up for it with some fun at home date nights during the week.
2. Thrush
So I had no idea what that even was, other than hearing it in relation to a problem you could have breastfeeding. Kolbe got it first and then apparently passed the infection to me and the long and short of it is that thrush is truly awful. I pretty much cry every time I nurse Kolbe. I didn't know what was going on, I didn't do anything about it quickly, and now we have it pretty bad.
So I got some advice from people about what to do and use for it. Unfortunately our car was in the shop that day, so Chris had taken the other one to work. The girls and I took a nice, long walk to a store to grab something to *hopefully* help.
The following day I picked up the only baby probiotic I could find. It had to be dissolved in some kind of liquid and Kolbe has never had a bottle, so we were worried that it wouldn't go well. Fortunately, he was a champ and sucked down an ounce and a half (and the probiotic). Here's to hoping that this misery goes away soon.
3. Two Months Old
Despite the horrors of thrush, Kolbe has been pretty good natured. He definitely is more cranky than he was in his first month, and likes to be swaddled and rocked to sleep, but all in all, he's still pretty darn chill all things considered.
Not even phased by the pile of "friends" that joined him in the swing one day

He loves snuggling!
And Daddy got A LOT of sweet smiles one evening. We've all gotten a few here and there too.
4. Pumpkin Spice Chex Mix
We decided to make our own pumpkin spice chex mix this week. The girls were big helpers and we all had a blast.
Our Pumpkin Spice Chex Mix
2 cups rice chex or corn chex
2 cups honey chex
2 cups cocoa balls (something like these)
1 cup chopped walnuts (or pecans or almonds)
1/4 cup butter (melted)
1/8 cup brown sugar
1-2 Tbsp pumpkin pie spice (I made my own with cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice, and ground cloves)
Mix cereals and nuts together. Pour melted butter evenly over and stir (or shake in a bowl with a lid). Add brown sugar and pumpkin pie spice and bake in 240 degree oven for an hour on parchment paper, stirring once or twice.
5. Pajama Day
Last week I let the girls have pajama day and they loved it. We pretty much spent the day reading library books and then watched a movie and had popcorn.
Sophie is the only one who looks much different in this picture. lol
6. Fall Leaves
You can go ahead and expect fall foliage pictures until we get snow here because I love fall, and I love fall colors, and I love the sound of crunching leaves. Did I mention I love fall?

I will also be wearing these until it snows...possibly even when it's snowing

7. Dating Anniversary
11 years ago, on Oct 24, I became Chris' girlfriend. It was ballet day, but Chris drove over to meet us at a cute little ice cream shop afterwards to celebrate the special occasion.
Nothing says love like buying me ice cream.
And the kids enjoyed it too.

Sorry about the thrush. Hopefully that probiotic does the the trick. Your pajama day looks like fun! We might have to try that as well. :)
ReplyDeleteOh I'm so glad I clicked over today. We battled thrush for three months with my second. Nothing the Dr gave me even put a dent in it. It was awful and painful but now I'm a thrush expert. :) Google Dr Jay Newman's thrush protocal. He saved me. Grapefruit seed extract can be ordered on amazon and it helps so much. I am actually using it now bc my youngest is on abx and I'm hoping to avoid thrush for both of us. Also, gentian violet is super effective, just messy. Once the thrush leaves, you will need to treat it for several more days to avoid a relapse. Also wash bras and sheets on hot with vinegar! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes to the probiotic, but pretty much everything I've read says you need to use a much much higher dose than the bottle says. So currently, I'm taking 9 pills a day, as opposed to the recommended 2. Sorry to overload you with information, I just know how painful it was and how hard it is to get rid of...
DeleteThank you, Holly, for the super helpful information! I read about grapefruit seed extract and couldn't find it at the two stores I went to. I should have thought about amazon. I did get gentian violet and it's helping. I just wish I had realized sooner what it was because at this point it's just so painful and even though there has been improvement it is still painful at this point . And you are not overloading. I appreciate the info. Thank you!!!
