November Library Favorites

We have found some really great books at the library this month.  So for all you out there who love reading wonderful, beautiful, and educational books to your kids, here are a few recommendations from our #libraryhaul

Mortimer's First Garden
We have the Christmas version, Mortimer's Christmas Manger, and the kids adore it.  When we found this one, we knew we'd love it too.  And we did.  So much that I bought it for Sophie for her birthday so that we can keep reading this one over and over again.

It weaves faith into the science of planting and growing a flower.

Jim Arnosky was recommended to me by my mother in law, and he never disappoints.  His artwork is fantastic, and his books share wonderful and fascinating knowledge.

At This Very Moment talks about various things that occur in nature and what you might be doing at home these things are happening outside, near and far.

Remembering Vera is a lovely Patricia Polacco book

It's based on the true story of a beloved Coast Guard dog, and our girls ADORED it.

A few books that had our kids in stitches.....
Click, Clack, Peep and 26 Fairmount Avenue.
The first is a simple picture book (there are many other silly books in the series) and the kids always giggle throughout them.  The second is by Tomie dePaola (his first chapter book) and is based on his own life.  It's a simple chapter book, and the kids loved the way he told his story so much that they begged for at least a chapter or two a night until we finished.  I didn't expect that they'd be so interested nor did I predict the amount of laughter this book would bring forth.  Can't wait grab the next one in his series.

Big Bear, Small Mouse is by the same author as Mortimer's First Garden. He has a series about Bear (Bears Snores On, etc...) and the girls love all those as well.  This lovely illustrated rhyming book teaches opposites as well.

Ella Fitzgerald was an interesting read about an incredible jazz singer and incorporated other greats whom she met and interacted with along her own journey in music.

Monet Paints a Day was a beautiful book that put you in the shoes of Monet painting for a day.  You can't help but want to go outside and paint a lovely landscape after reading.

Rags: Hero Dog of WWI

Another book about a courageous dog in history that the girls loved.
Now they all desperately want a puppy.

Just Being Audrey

There are few actresses that exhibit the beauty that Audrey does, both inside and out.  This captivating story is filled with reasons to love Audrey and the pictures are delightful.
I can't wait to watch a few of her films with the girls before too long.  Then we'll have to check the book out again and read about her all over again.

Another Jim Arnosky title, Slow Down for Manatees was part of our Florida study.

Filled with interesting information and enchanting pictures. The girls had fun afterwards drawing manatees in their nature journals.

Deep in the Swamp was another book we grabbed for our Florida state study.

Rhyming, counting, and beautiful illustrations of Florida animals. In the back there is a page with neat facts about each animal as well.

Just a couple of our Hawaii state study book finds.
The Tsunami Quilt and Dolphin Baby!

The Tsunami Quilt is based on a true story about a tsunami that hit Hawaii and made me tear up.  Though sad, it's beautiful and touching.  Dolphin baby is full of information about dolphins as they grow up.

I meant to get this post up long ago so that others might snag some of these great Thanksgiving book finds, but there's always next year, because they were really cute.
The Very Fairy Princess: Attitude of Gratitude was a cute story about learning to have an attitude of gratitude and how it can change your whole perspective.

Thanksgiving Day by Gail Gibbons.  Fun pictures, good info.

The Very First Thanksgiving Day, Sharing the Bread, and This is The Feast were three books that shared beautiful information about Thanksgiving in rhyme.

An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving (by Louisa May Alcott) was a delightful story about family and the illustrations were gorgeous.  Chris read The Thanksgiving Bowl to the girls but said they really enjoyed it.

Happy reading!

First Day of School 2017 and the Solar Eclipse

We decided to start our school year the day of the solar eclipse.  What better day to start than one that involves such a great study in science?  :)  And what a fun day it was.  In fact, as we studied aspects of the solar eclipse on Ava's very first day of school ever, she told me, "This is the best day ever, Mommy!"

Some cute first day shots (there's a bunch more at the end of the post...haha)

We watched live NASA coverage on their website for awhile and learned all about solar eclipses and saw neat pictures.

When it was set to happen (at 93% totality) in the Denver area we headed outside with our pin hole viewer to see the shape of the eclipse.

Hard to see in a picture, but you get the idea, and the girls thought it was fascinating to see the little sliver appear on the paper.

Our neighbor had a pair of safe glasses to view the eclipse that she let us borrow so we could all take a look and not burn our retinas.

I pointed my camera up and took some shots and the the eclipse showed up in the shots (ghosted), but really rather cool, I thought.

The kids also noticed the eclipse shapes on the ground made by effect of the sun shining through trees.  After finding them on driveways, they ran around the cul-de-sac looking for the eclipses in other spots (on cars, houses, chairs, etc).

We enjoyed chocolate chips on mini marshmallows to make little "total eclipses"

We drew eclipes with sidewalk chalk

The girls added some very interesting notes and pictures to their nature journals.  It was cute to see what each of them drew and Kayla was like a sponge and her journal writing reflected just how much she soaked in.

That evening we had eclipse oreos for a treat.

And another blast of First Day of School 2017 pictures because they are just so cute.

A fun start to the beginning of what promises to be another fun year!
