K is for Kangaroo project

My daughter and I have been creating a personalized ABC's book for over a year now.
Simple binder with clear plastic protectors, but it is a wonderful learning tool because the book is personal to her so she loves looking at it and practicing the letters we've already 'studied'.

We are currently working on letter 'k'.  We did a K is for Kangaroo project the other day.  Some of the projects we do are more "kid-centered" (i.e. 'Alice' can do them mostly on her own with very limited help) while others require more adult participation.  Both types of project have a place in learning.  This particular project required much more adult help, but if done with an older child (5-6 years old), they could do most of it themselves.

The materials:
Kangaroo template (I just drew it freehand), glue, crayons, scissors

Step One: Cut out the kangaroo pieces.

Step Two: Kayla and I put the pieces together to see what the kangaroo would look like.  I asked her which pieces she thought we should glue first (I prompted her to note which pieces were on the bottom under the others because they would need to be glued first).  She did really well and we labeled a picture of a kangaroo with numbers so we'd know which parts needed to go on first, second, third, fourth.  That was a bit of an extra exercise to enhance the learning process a little more.

Step Three: Use a paintbrush (for young preschoolers and toddlers) to apply glue to the pieces of the kangaroo.

Step Four:  Color the kangaroo for added fun and to personalize it.  Kayla loved her kangaroo.

Extra enhancement: Read books about kangaroos.  Winnie the Pooh books work well and we found this really cute book titled "Pouch" at our local library.  And if you are especially fun and don't mind acting like a carefree child, jump around the room like a kangaroo with your kiddos!
