We made these really cute paintings of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary just in time for the feasts (Sacred Heart tomorrow and Immaculate Heart on Saturday).
This project was very tough for my two year old. She needed help on every aspect to make it look at all like the Sacred Heart. My (almost) 4 year old was able to do the first half herself, but needed some guidance with the flowers and sword on the Immaculate Heart. This project could easily be done by kids 6+
I made an example freehand so the girls could see what the basic project would look like.
2. Stamp a red heart using a cookie cutter (this step is nice for toddlers to help them paint a heart without needing so much adult help). Kayla was able to paint the heart herself after I helped her stamp the heart with the cookie cutter.
3. I made a very light marking to show Kayla and Elise where to paint orange for the flame at the top of the heart. (Click on the picture to enlarge it and see the marking)
4. We added some orange paint to the "hand" rays and some red to the orange flame for added dimension and effect. Kayla was able to do all these parts with verbal direction only.
5. Elise did the Sacred Heart, which is the easier of the two as the crown of thorns and cross are fairly simple to paint on. Of course, Elise required assistance, but for an older toddler, like Kayla, the Sacred Heart picture would have been almost easy enough to do on her own with only verbal direction.
6. Kayla practiced flowers on a separate paper for a bit until she felt more comfortable. Then I drew faint little circles inside a slighter larger circle. She used these to help guide her when painting the flowers on the Immaculate Heart. First she painted black in the middle circles. Then she painted pink "dots" in the larger circle around the little black circle. You will need a very fine paint brush for this part. We also added a few green strokes for some leaves.
7. I drew the outline of the sword since Kayla is quite young. She did a great job painting in the lines and making it her own artwork.
She was very proud of her accomplishment.
There are some great prayer resources for both Feast Days on these websites:
This is an especially meaningful project for our girls because both the hubby and I work for Immaculate Heart Radio . Please keep the radio station and it's Mission in your prayers especially on the Feast of the Immaculate Heart!
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus...have mercy on us!
Immaculate Heart of Mary...pray for us!
