Sacred or Immaculate Heart Mosaic and Sun Catcher

We did a few more projects for the feasts of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary.  We have had a busy week so I didn't get these up when I wanted to...but they were really fun to do with the kiddos!

(Immaculate Heart) Sun Catcher
You could of course change this slightly to make it the Sacred Heart instead)

Fold a paper in half and cut out half a heart.  Paint yellow rays outside the heart and orange flames at the top.

Use transparent contact paper (or do what we did and use a few strips of clear packing tape) to cover the heart-shaped hole.  Tear up pieces of tissue paper (we used red for the heart and pink/purple for the flowers).  Place the pink/purple pieces in a line across the center of the heart and cover the rest of the heart with red pieces.  Add contact paper (or tape) to the other side and voila!  A beautiful sun catcher of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

(Sacred Heart) Mosaic
can be made into the Immaculate Heart instead, of course)

Use the heart from the last project (or cut out a medium sized heart).  Place it on another sheet of paper and draw a light outline of rays and flames around the heart.  (Click on the picture to enlarge and see the detail if needed)

Cut out pieces of yellow, orange and red paper.  This is a great project for young children to practice using scissors.  The pieces can be any shape, so they can't cut it "wrong", but it allows them to practice holding scissors correctly, and train their fingers to use the correct muscles to cut properly.

Kayla and Elise did this project together.  While Kayla was gluing yellow and orange on the rays and flames, Elise glued red pieces to the heart.

I cut out some small thin black strips for Kayla to glue onto the heart in a line of "Xs" for the crown of thorns.

And the finished product is a lovely mosaic of the Sacred Heart.
 I LOVE mosaics.
