Kayla planned a flower tea party and invited about 4 girls from the neighborhood. She didn't bother to tell me. Luckily she DID fill me in on the plan before it happened, so I could tell her that we can't just invite people over without an actual game plan of some kind, one that Mom knows about.
So we started over. Instead of random little notes that none of her friends showed their parents anyway, she wrote out actual invitations and decorated them. And they included an RSVP with my cell number, so that I could be sure we'd have some idea of who was coming.
She made flowery decorations (place mats, napkin holders etc) and asked me to get some fresh flowers. Kayla's original tea party "menu" (she got her ideas from a book she has) was a little lengthy and complicated. I helped her pare down her food list to just a couple fun little items (flower sugar cookies, lemonade-"the tea", and apples with a little yogurt for dipping). One of her friends has celiac, so her mom brought some little gluten free donuts and tea cookies to share). We used some leftover pink paper plates from some birthday party from a few years ago and mismatched tea cups/coffee mugs.
And that was it. We ended up adding a few to the party since a few other girls from further down the street ended up being added last minute, but that wasn't a problem. We had made plenty of sugar cookies and there was plenty of "tea".
It wasn't crazy and ornate, but it was lovely and very specially planned with love by Kayla (with a little help from me). It was fun and we officially hosted our first little "neighborhood event".
The girls wore flowery dresses and a few brought fancy hats. They all used such nice manners and it was just the sweetest thing ever. This is the kind of "party" I can get behind. So sweet and so simple. And Kayla and I got to bake together and practice some fraction math as part of the deal beforehand. Win-win.
